FAQ

Q: Is the Laser Defuser legal?
A: The Laser Defuser is designed to boost a signal to 904 nanometers, the frequency used by police laser guns. Because it does not interfere with radio waves or any devices regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and no other laser diodes are used, the Defuser is completely safe and legal to use.

Q: How does the Laser Defuser work?
A: The Laser Defuser is an active protection system that detects and deactivates police laser signals. Concealed in a special ABS plastic, stealth OEM looking license plate frame, the Defuser is designed to receive a laser light signal transmitted by police laser at 904 nanometers. It then notifies the driver with a unique audible and visual alert hidden discreetly inside the cars cockpit. Simultaneously, the Defuser sends out a return pulse signal at the same frequency as police laser that the laser gun cannot understand, thus resulting in no speed reading.

Q: I've heard that K40 pay speeding tickets... is that for real?
A: K40 has absolute confidence in the performance of their products, you should never get a ticket when they are operating and used properly. In the rare event you should receive a speeding ticket in the first 12 months of ownership, K40 will pay any and all fines(excludes tickets issued in school zones, construction zones and/or when DWI or DUI is involved) no questions asked. No other radar manufacturer dares to offer this performance guarantee.

Q: Why do people need the Laser Defuser if their current detector has laser detection capabilities?
A: The high tech police laser guns being used today are fast and far more accurate than before. At typical target ranges, a laser beam measures less than 36" in diameter. And this narrow, infrared, monochromatic, one milliradian, laser emission does not scatter like a police radar signal. In other words, a driver receives no advanced warning to laser when it's aimed at another vehicle. With laser guns capable of measuring a vehicle's speed in less than one second, by the time an ordinary laser detector alarms it's too late. Only the Laser Defuser can provide drivers with the time needed to react and safely reduce their speed every time.

Q: How much warning time does a K40 radar detector provide?
A: Trying to estimate warning time in an actual mile or feet measurement is impossible because true warning time is also influenced by many outside variables that have nothing to do with the radar detector itself. For example, the strength of the radar signal being transmitted, the direction the gun is pointed, the length of time it's transmitting, the positioning of the patrol car, and the influence of other objects around you may all effect how your radar detector receives a signal. For these reasons, don't expect your detector to achieve the same warning distance every time you encounter police radar. Just expect it to do what you bought it for - to give you enough time to slow down and save yourself from receiving a speeding ticket.

Q: What's the difference between sensitivity and selectivity?
A: Sensitivity refers to a radar detectors ability to pick up the police signals at the greatest distance. Selectivity refers to the detectors ability to filter out signals that are not true police signals, but operate on the same frequencies as police radar (i.e. burglar alarms, garage doors, automatic doors etc.) The filtration software built into CALIBRE radar receivers features very unique microelectronic processors that minimize distractions that come from non police radar transmitters. The purpose for doing this is simple- sensitivity means nothing if drivers don't know when to believe an alert. That's why our system is designed for ideal performance. Giving you the time you need to react to potential threats, without constant "falsing" that makes other detectors difficult in today's challenging driving environment.

Q: Sometimes I pass a parked car or one traveling in the other direction, but my detector doesn't alarm. Why is that?
A: Radar detectors are essentially superheterodyne radio receivers. Like any radio, they are passive devices that listen for microwave signals. The main difference is that they are specially tuned to detect microwave frequencies transmitted by police radar and laser guns. If a police car is not equipped with a radar of laser gun, a radar detector can not possibly locate it. Also, if no signal is transmitted when you pass the police car, there won't be anything for your detector to receive. Police may also use a sinister technique called "Instant-on" or "RF hold". During this type of encounter, an officer will wait until a targeted vehicle is within range to send a quick burst of radar to clock the vehicles speed. CALIBRE radar detectors are sensitive enough to detect these brief, weak signals, but you have to pay attention and react quickly.

HD Radio

Like the evolution from records and cassette tapes to compact disks, HD Radio technology brings analog radio signals into the digital age. After upgrading to a digital broadcasting system developed exclusively by a company called Ibiquity Digital, your favorite radio stations can transmit digital audio signals. More stations are converting to HD Radio technology all the time and most major cities now have a wide selection of broadcasts. For a complete list of HD Radio broadcasters, visit hdradio.com.

What Do I Need to Tune in?

All that's required to listen to HD Radio is a new HD Radio receiver for your home or car. This next-generation tabletop device not only radically upgrades the performance of traditional analog AM/FM signals, but also receives digital broadcasts and their associated wireless data services over existing AM/FM radio bands. The result is spectacularly brilliant clarity, fidelity, and room-filling sound never before heard on any radio of any size. And don't worry, your analog radio will work just fine with HD Radio. The system is designed to broadcast analog signals right alongside the digital ones.

Why is HD Radio Better?

When you decide to upgrade to an HD Radio receiver, you'll notice a big difference right off the bat. When listening to FM stations in HD, you'll experience CD-quality sound with crystal-clear reception. The technology behind HD Radio means that there's no hiss, distortion, or station drop off. Meanwhile, AM stations will offer FM-quality sound. Yes, now you can listen to your favorite AM sports, news, and talk in full stereo.

HD radio also offers features that only a digital signal can offer, such as real-time artist and song IDs, traffic alerts, stock tickers, sports scores, and other valuable information.

In most cities, the radio dial is pretty crowded and there's not much more room for additional programming. HD Radio changes all of that by offering multiple channels on the same frequency.

How Much Does it Cost?

Are you interested in HD Radio now? There's one more thing that might just make you take the leap: It's all totally free. Once you have an HD Radio receiver, you're set. There are no subscriptions or activation fees. It's just like the radio you've always enjoyed, just a lot better.
